Take a shortcut to your header window in Word
Takeaway: Did you know that you can set up a shortcut to get to the header window in your Word document? In this tip from Mary Ann Richardson, learn how to skip the menus and get to the top in no time.
There are no toolbar buttons to get you quickly to your Word document's header window—you can only get there through the View | Header And Footer menu. Likewise, to get to your document footer, you first have to go to View | Header And Footer, and then click a tool in the Header And Footer toolbar to switch to the Footer window. Rather than clicking through the menus, you can create shortcut keys that will take you directly where you want to go. Follow these steps:
- Go to Tools | Customize.
- On the Commands tab, click the Keyboard button.
- Under Categories, click View.
- Under Commands, click ViewHeader.
- Put your cursor in the Press New Shortcut Key text box.
- Press [Alt], (comma).
- Click the Assign button.
- Under Commands, click ViewFooter.
- Put your cursor in the Press New Shortcut Key text box.
- Press [Alt]. (period).
- Click the Assign button.
- Click Close twice.
Now you have another way to create and edit a header for your document by pressing [Alt], (comma). You can also go directly to your footer window by pressing [Alt]. (period).
Note that these shortcut keys may be adapted to whichever key you wish—not just periods or commas—but take care not to use a shortcut combination that has already been assigned, such as for Replace, Paste, and Find.
