Takeaway: With the Exchange System Manager, you can manage users from a computer other than your Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 server. Follow these steps to install the Exchange System Manager.

If you need to manage users from a computer other than your Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 server, you must install the Exchange System Manager. Without Exchange System Manager, the Active Directory Users And Computers snap-in won't perform Exchange-related tasks or display Exchange-specific user properties.

Of course, you could use Remote Desktop to access your Exchange server when performing user maintenance, but some administrators prefer performing these tasks from their own system. If you're one of them, don't worry: Installing Exchange System Manager is easy.

Follow these steps:

  1. Run the Exchange setup program from the Exchange server.
  2. In the Component Selection dialog box, select Microsoft Exchange 2000 or Microsoft Exchange 2003 (depending on the version you're installing, of course).
  3. Change the Installation option to Custom.
  4. Select Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools, and select Install.
  5. Leave all other components at the default setting of None.
  6. Click OK to continue the installation.

The Exchange-related information should now be available from your computer.
