Takeaway: If you support Windows CE devices, you've probably had end users who have filled their handhelds' memory with megabytes of useless info. Here are three tips you can share with these individuals to help keep their handhelds clean and running smoothly.

The 16 or 32 MB of RAM, standard on many Windows CE devices, provides ample space for the average end user or support tech. However, there are ways you can make the most of this memory. Here are three tips to help you maximize your Windows CE storage space.

1. Install and store only necessary files
Every few weeks, I take a hard look at the applications installed on my E-100, and if I haven’t used one of them recently, I uninstall it. The less software you have installed, the more responsive your PDA will be. Remember the motto: “Keep it lean!”

While it’s cool to view MP3s, JPGs, GIFs, and MPEGs on your Windows CE Device, these files can consume a considerable amount of space (MPEG files routinely exceed 40 MB). Unless these files are absolutely necessary or you have a secondary storage source (Compact flash card or similar device), I recommend keeping these files off your PDA.

2. Utilize secondary storage whenever possible
Devices such as Casio’s CompactFlash cards (available in 16-, 32-, and 64-MB sizes) can greatly increase your Windows CE appliance’s storage capacity. IBM even manufactures a 1-GB Microdrive™ that is compatible with some handhelds. Flash cards are available from most electronics retailers, starting around $30 for an 8-MB version. On the pricier side, IBM’s Microdrive™ will set you back about $500.

A word of caution: These devices can significantly decrease battery life. This isn’t usually a problem for someone like me who charges his battery whenever I’m at my desk, but this can be an issue for individuals who spend lots of time on the move.

3. Frequently clear your Windows\TEMP folder of files that aren’t needed any longer
This is a good idea to do regularly as this folder easily accumulates files that are not necessary. Generally, any file with a date older than today’s date can be removed. If you aren’t sure, copy the file to your host PC before deleting it. This way you can copy it back if a problem appears after deletion.

How much is too much?
While all three of my tips will help you make the most or your Windows CE device’s memory, the first one is the most important. You should always ask yourself, “How many applications do I really need on my PDA?” Odds are, if you use an application less than once a month, it doesn’t need to be on your handheld.
