Takeaway: Everyone has heard the debate before—EIDE hard drive or SCSI hard drive? You have an opinion, and now it's time you were heard! Join us for Support Republic's first ever Point and Counterpoint.

Point and Counterpoint is a new column feature for the Support Republic. Its purpose is to present a balanced discussion between our members regarding hardware, software, and any other topic that our members wish to discuss.
EIDE vs. SCSI hard drives
This is a debate that every support tech has heard before. Which is better, EIDE or SCSI hard drives? In the past, the clear winner has always been the SCSI hard drives due to their speed and versatility. However, with the onset of faster, larger, and definitely cheaper EIDE hard drives, does this rule still hold true?

In comparison
I decided to compare specs on two Western Digital hard drives. The first one was an EIDE Western Digital Caviar 20.5-GB hard drive. Its specs are as follows:

Table A
Cyl x Hds x Spt RPM Transfer Mode Average Read Seek
16383 x 16 x 63* 7200 66.6 MB/s 9.0 ms
Table A shows the specs for Western Digital’s EIDE Caviar 20.5-GB hard drive.

Next up for comparison was a SCSI Western Digital Vantage 18.3-GB hard drive. The specs for it are as follows:

Table B
Width/Height RPM Interface Average Read Seek
3.5-inch/low profile 10,000 Ultra / Ultra2 SCSI 6.6 ms
Table B shows the specs for Western Digital’s SCSI Vantage 18.3-GB hard drive.

For a more detailed analysis of these two hard drives, visit the Western Digital Web site by clicking Western Digital Caviar or Western Digital Vantage.

The point
EIDE fans, it’s time to make your case. Do you believe that we can begin to move away from the rule of the SCSI hard drive? Let us know what you think! You can leave a post below or send us an e-mail pleading your case. Remember, you’re trying to prove a point, so make sure your argument is clear and concise!

The counterpoint
SCSI loyalists, step up to the challenge! Do you think that SCSI hard drives still rule the network and always will? State your claim! You can leave a post below or send us an e-mail telling us why EIDE will never overthrow SCSI. Remember that just like the EIDE people, you’re trying to drum up support for your position, so make sure your messages are clear and concise, too!
